End Of Summer
Dear Family, Friends, and Parrish enthusiasts everywhere:
In the hot days of summer what is better than retiring somewhere to a leafy glen with a good book and the comfort of a pool of water nearby? Parrish built just before the turn of the century at his home “TheOaks” in Plainfield, New Hampshire a beautiful round reflecting pool in his front garden that gave the artist and his family many hours of leisure. The pool was surrounded by great oaks that shaded the area which overlooked the magnificent Mt. Ascutney in the distance.
In 1899 the artist shared the peaceful beauty and tranquility of the space with this summer cover for the Scribner’s Magazine which I now share with you.
Just to show you what the scene looked like later on in the 20th Century, here is a picture of the famous reflecting pool in front of the steps leading down from Parrish’s open porch at “The Oaks”.
