2020 Maxfield Parrish Exhibit & Sale!

SEPTEMBER 2020

The Parrish landscape which I thought I would use this month is a rare and very little known river landscape scene called Riverbank Autumn. Parrish created this scene in 1938 as a personal gift for a young woman whom he had met two years previously and had fallen deeply, emotionally and totally in love with late in his life.

Maxfield Parrish / Riverbank Autumn

Riverbank Autumn (1938)

The young woman, descended from a very prestigious American founding family, was named Nancy Roelker.  After attending and graduating from Radcliffe College, she was hired in the summer of 1936 to be an assistant editor for Parrish’s best friend and neighbor, the American writer Winston Churchill.

Their torrid love affair is documented in a series of about 300+ handwritten letters that the artist sent to her over a number of years, and discussed in my latest book on Parrish’s life titled:  Maxfield Parrish:  The Secret Letters. To my knowledge, my book is the only one that has shown this magnificent painting which is privately owned.

I still have one reproduction in stock which I had made of this painting as a Giclee on canvas laid down on board and which sells for $150.00 unframed.  Dimensions are 18″ x 20″.  I also still have copies of the Secret Letters book for sale at $39.95. Two hundred pages of fascinating reading into insights of Parrish’s private life.
