2019 Maxfield Parrish Exhibit & Sale!

Dear friends, collectors and Parrish enthusiasts:

It’s back to school time! September means children are attending classes once more, trying to make sense of letters and numbers.  Maxfield Parrish attempted to help the learning process with his two whimsical magazine cover classics: commonly called simply “Arithmetic” and “Alphabet”.

School Days (aka “Alphabet”) 1908
Private Collection

In the first half of the twentieth century, back when there was no such thing as TV to occupy our days, people read weekly literary magazines. The big four of these were Life, Look, Collier’s and the Saturday Evening Post.  Maxfield Parrish did numerous cover paintings for both Life and Collier’s through the years. In the case of Life Magazine starting with its Christmas cover in 1899, and extending until December 1936 with the last Collier’s  cover.

Arithmetic – 1909
Private Collection

Alphabet (also called School Days) was the Collier’s cover for the September 12, 1908 issue, while this theme was reprised with Arithmetic as the cover for their September 30, 1911 issue,

As was Parrish’s custom, he would pose a real person as a model for any human figure in one of his paintings. In the case of Alphabet, he photographed his young son Dillwyn sitting on the gate post at his residence “The Oaks” in New Hampshire, and incorporated the image into the design.
